I was drawn to the perioperative setting because of its dynamic and fast-paced environment, where critical thinking and teamwork are essential. As a nursing student, I’ve always been fascinated by surgical procedures and patient care during the perioperative process. This role allows me to gain hands-on experience, develop technical skills, and deepen my understanding of patient advocacy in a high-stakes setting. I’m eager to contribute to the surgical team while learning from experienced professionals, which will prepare me for a future career as a perioperative nurse.

In high-pressure situations, I remain calm by focusing on prioritization and effective communication. During clinical rotations, I’ve encountered emergencies where I had to act quickly while maintaining patient safety. I rely on my training, follow protocols, and collaborate with the team to ensure the best outcomes. I also practice self-reflection to identify areas for improvement. This approach helps me stay composed and deliver quality care, even in stressful environments like the operating room.

During my clinical rotations, I’ve had the opportunity to observe and assist in maintaining sterile fields in the operating room. I understand the importance of aseptic techniques to prevent infections and ensure patient safety. I’ve practiced proper hand hygiene, donning sterile gloves, and handling sterile instruments. While I’m still learning, I’m committed to adhering to strict protocols and seeking guidance from experienced staff to refine my skills in this critical aspect of perioperative care.

Effective communication is vital in the OR, and I prioritize clarity, brevity, and active listening. I ensure I understand instructions by repeating them back when necessary and asking questions if something is unclear. I also pay attention to non-verbal cues and maintain situational awareness. By fostering open communication and mutual respect, I aim to contribute to a cohesive team environment that enhances patient safety and procedural efficiency.

Preparing a patient for surgery involves both physical and emotional preparation. I ensure the patient’s medical history is reviewed, consent forms are signed, and pre-operative assessments are completed. I also verify NPO status and administer pre-operative medications as ordered. Emotionally, I provide reassurance, answer questions, and address concerns to alleviate anxiety. My goal is to create a supportive environment that helps the patient feel confident and prepared for their procedure.
