Building rapport involves active listening, empathy, and respect for the individual's autonomy. I start by finding common interests or activities that can serve as a bridge to open communication. Using non-judgmental language and validating their feelings helps establish trust. I also ensure that my actions align with my words, demonstrating consistency and reliability. Over time, this approach fosters a supportive relationship where the individual feels understood and valued.

When an intervention plan is not effective, I first review and adjust the plan's components, such as reinforcement schedules or target behaviors. I consult with the individual's support team to gather additional insights and perspectives. If necessary, I seek guidance from behavioral specialists or conduct a functional behavior assessment to identify new strategies. Adapting the plan based on ongoing data collection and feedback ensures that we remain responsive to the individual's needs.

In my experience, crisis intervention begins with early identification of potential triggers and maintaining a calm, supportive presence. I use de-escalation techniques such as active listening, validation, and providing choices to empower the individual. Physical interventions are a last resort, used only when safety is at risk. I have received specialized training in non-violent crisis intervention and continuously update my skills to ensure the highest level of care and safety for all involved.
